چکیده

function in the blackworm, Lumbriculus variegatus (Class Oligochaeta). This worm is being used at high school and college levels for student laboratory exercises and research projects. It has proven quite useful and reliable for studies of segment regeneration, circulatory physiology, locomotion, eco-toxicology, and neurobiology (Drewes, 1996a; Lesiuk and Drewes, 1998; Drewes and Cain, 1998). The following article provides students and instructors with general information about this worm’s nervous system which is not currently available in any biology texts. Correspondence or questions about this information are welcome. The Vitamin E analog Trolox reduces copper toxicity in the annelid Lumbriculus variegatus but is also toxic on its own.

The ability of the water-soluble Vitamin E analog, Trolox, to prevent the toxic effects of copper exposure on the behavior and neuronal physiology of the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus was examined. Trolox produced a concentration-dependent increase in the 24 h LC(50) for copper exposure, with 100 microM Trolox elevating the LC(50) by almost seven-fold (from 0.36 to 2.43 microM)....

Ecological Uptake and Depuration of Carbon Nanotubes by Lumbriculus variegatus

BACKGROUND Carbon nanotubes represent a class of nanomaterials having broad application potentials and documented cellular uptake and ecotoxicological effects that raise the possibility that they may bioaccumulate in living organisms. OBJECTIVES Radioactively labeled nanotubes were synthesized using a novel methane chemical vapor deposition procedure. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), m...

Agar Sediment Test for Assessing the Suitability of Organic Waste Streams for Recovering Nutrients by the Aquatic Worm Lumbriculus variegatus

An agar sediment test was developed to evaluate the suitability of organic waste streams from the food industry for recovering nutrients by the aquatic worm Lumbriculus variegatus (Lv). The effects of agar gel, sand, and food quantities in the sediment test on worm growth, reproduction, and water quality were studied. Agar gel addition ameliorated growth conditions by reducing food hydrolysis a...

A Kinematic Study of Pulsation in the Dorsal Blood Vessel of the blackworm, Lumbriculus variegatus

The aquatic oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus has a segmented, dorsal blood vessel (DBV) that acts as a peristaltic pump to move blood through the animal’s closed circulatory system. We conducted a kinematic study using videography and computational modeling as a first step toward understanding the control of DBV pulsation. Results suggested that pulse rates were highest in the posterior segme...

Assessing the acute hazards of zinc oxide nanomaterials to Lumbriculus variegatus.

These studies were undertaken in order to propose and test new methods for the assessment of the acute hazard of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) to the sediment dwelling oligochaete worm Lumbriculus variegatus. In order to support the developing nanotechnology sector, comprehensive studies must be conducted to assess the toxicity of nanomaterials (NMs) using environmentally relevant organisms. An impor...
